- Take a Step Back in Time -

It all began in 1961 on the Docks of Whiticar Boat Works

-

The Motor Yacht Elegante started out as Aphrodite when she was built over fifty years ago for John Hay "jock" Whitney. It all began with a conversation between the harbor master Jack Whiticar and Jock Whitney. Jock wanted to sell his commuter boat and purchase a Trumpy to socialize and entertain on. Jack mentioned to Jock that his brother Curt was a fine boat builder and asked if he would give him a chance at the project. Curt drew up plans based off the Trumpy style and the rest is history. Jack Whiticar then became the first captain after her completion in 1964. He spent many summers aboard the Aphrodite with Jock and Mr. Whiticar's family until Jock passed away in 1982.

-

In the early 1980's Louise O'Connor of Houston, Texas began searching for a small yacht to make her own. In a boat yard south of Palm Beach, Florida she found the Aphrodite in need of a major renovation. As said by Louis O'Conner herself  "She was a mess when I found her and I always felt she sent for me to save her."  Louis took on the major project that added much of the teak and mahogany that you see in the Elegante today. Once the Aphrodite was complete she was rechristened Bandarlog, name after the monkeys in Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. During Bandarlog's days she spent her time at her home port of Chub Cay where Louis would have many fishing trips on the stern of the yacht with family and friends. In 1995 after nearly 15 years with the Bandarlog, Louis sold the Bandarlog to Wilbert and Peg Hamstra of Indiana.

-

Shortly after purchasing the Bandarlog the Hamstra's rechristened the Elegante and began a 16 year voyage with her. The Elegante began to put on an average of 6,000 miles a year ranging from the North Channel in Ontario Canada, Nova Scota to Naples, Florida and the Bahamas. Though her home port was in Naples, Florida she spent some time at Chicago's Navy Pier. Even today you can walk into mosst any Walgreen's in Chicago and see the Elegante on a postcard docked in front of Navy Pier.

-

In 2011 William and Pat Anton began their time aboard the Elegante. Since then a complete over hall of the Elegante began by the current crew Jack and Renee Grimes. Some upgrades were functional, some mechanical and there were quite a few navigational and technology upgrades as well. In additon to these upgrades there were many quality of life upgrades including; a custom swim ladder, wine storage, commercial ice makers and refrigeraton, toys, paddle boards floating islands and of course for those who know the Anton's well a Special Champagne chilling and storage system. And if you know the Anton's you will understand their need for a proper audio system and an authentic disco ball that was included in the overhaul as well.

The Elegante celebrated her 50th birthday in 2014 at Whiticar Boat Work in Stuart, Florida.
